Whoever Does Good Is From God
This meditation is based on a passage for May 29, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: 3 John 1-15
Reflection and Question: Whether the writer of 3 John is the same as the writer of 1 John, the bottom line for Christians is the same in all three letters: “Whoever does good is from God.” We may call them “good,” or “the fruits of the Spirit,” or “loving one another.” This is the test of a true believer in Christ and by that test the GLBT Christians I know join Gaius in faithfulness to the truth. For GLBT faithful, as for all others, good works are evidence that all is well with our souls. How do you walk in the truth and imitate what is good?
Prayer: When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well, with my soul.
(Horatio Spafford, 1873, It is Well with My Soul, United Methodist Hymnal, 377)
